National Pina Colada Day

A Pina Colada is traditionally made with rum, cream from the coconut and pineapple juice. The name “Pina Colada” means “strained pineapple” and refers to the pineapple juice that is added to the drink.

There are several claims on who originally created the drink, the first mention is in 1922, and two different claims the invention of the cocktail in 1952, in San Juan.

June 14 National Strawberry Shortcake Day

National Strawberry Shortcake Day is observed each year on June 14th.  Either on a shortcake biscuit or a sponge cake, strawberry shortcake is an easy and refreshing summertime dessert!

Strawberries are sliced, mixed with sugar then allowed to sit for about an hour until they have surrendered plenty of their juices. The shortcakes are then split, and the bottom is covered with a layer of the strawberries, juice and whipped cream.  The top is then put back on, and more strawberries, juice and whipped cream are added to finish it off. –National Day

June 12 National Peanut Butter Cookie Day

Alabama’s American agricultural extension educator, George Washington Carver, was the most well-known promoter of the peanut. Carver compiled 105 peanut recipes from various cookbooks, agricultural bulletins, and other sources.  In 1916, he put together a Research Bulletin called How to Grow the Peanut and 105 Ways of Preparing it for Human Consumption. Included in this Research Bulletin were three recipes for peanut cookies calling for crushed or chopped peanuts as one of its ingredients.

It was in the early 1920s that peanut butter was found listed as an ingredient in cookies.

June 11 National German Chocolate Day

Its roots can be traced back to 1852 when American baker Samuel German developed a type of dark baking chocolate for the Baker’s Chocolate Company. The brand name of the product, Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate, was named in honor of him.

On June 3, 1957, a recipe for “German’s Chocolate Cake” appeared as the “Recipe of the Day” in The Dallas Morning News. It was created by Mrs. George Clay, a homemaker from 3831 Academy Drive, Dallas, Texas. This recipe used the baking chocolate introduced 105 years prior and became quite popular. General Foods, which owned the Baker’s brand at the time, took notice and distributed the cake recipe to other newspapers in the country. Sales of Baker’s Chocolate are said to have increased by as much as 73% and the cake would become a national staple. The possessive form (German’s) was dropped in subsequent publications, forming the “German Chocolate Cake” identity and giving the false impression of a German origin. –Wikipedia

June 3 National Chocolate Macaroon Day

National Chocolate Macaroon Day is celebrated each year on June 3. The day comes right behind National Macaroon Day which is observed on May 31.

Macaroons are a quick and easy dessert made mostly of coconut, eggs and sugar with some variations.

Coconut macaroon is the best known variety in America. Commercially made coconut macaroons are generally dense, moist and sweet, and often dipped in chocolate. Homemade macaroons and varieties produced by smaller bakeries are commonly light and fluffy. Macaroons made with coconuts are often piped out with a star shaped tip, whereas macaroons made with nuts are more likely shaped individually due to the stiffness of the dough.

June 2 National Rocky Road Day

Although there are many variations, traditionally, Rocky Road ice cream was composed of chocolate ice cream, nuts, and marshmallows.  Today, there are variations with vanilla ice cream, chocolate chips, and almonds.

National Day

According to one source, the flavor was created in March 1929 by William Dreyer in Oakland, California when he cut up walnuts and marshmallows with his wife’s sewing scissors and added them to his chocolate ice cream in a manner that reflected how his partner Joseph Edy‘s chocolate candy creation incorporated walnuts and marshmallow pieces.[2] Later, the walnuts would be replaced by pieces of toasted almond. After the Wall Street Crash of 1929, Dreyer and Edy gave the flavor its current name “to give folks something to smile about in the midst of the Great Depression.”[2] Alternatively, Fentons Creamery in Oakland claims that William Dreyer based his recipe on a Rocky Road-style ice cream flavor invented by his friend, Fentons’ George Farren, who blended his own Rocky Road-style candy bar into ice cream; however, Dreyer substituted almonds for walnuts.[3]
The original Rocky Road ice cream used chocolate ice cream with no chocolate chip pieces.[4]

Like their name entails, these cookies get their inspiration from rocky road ice cream: a chocolate base with almonds, chocolate chips, and marshmallow fluff both on the inside and drizzled on top.
